Learning and development at DCMS

DCMS is committed to developing and supporting its people. By offering challenging and stimulating roles, practical learning and a range of in-house and cross-civil service development opportunities, our ambition is to enable everyone to realise their potential.

In DCMS we encourage everyone to prioritise their own development, and demonstrate Civil Service professionalism by taking personal responsibility for this. We encourage all our staff to invest 5 days of relevant learning each year to continuously develop their professional skills and knowledge.

Anything that helps you do your job counts, including a challenging piece of work, e-learning, shadowing, seminars, workshops and Lunch & Learns, as well as formal courses.

As well as supporting you with on-the-job training, relevant courses and subscriptions we have a number of other opportunities to support your training.

DCMS Academy

The DCMS Academy has been developed to provide colleagues with easy access to numerous training opportunities.

We have created a curriculum of in-house bitesize learning for you to improve your knowledge and skills, and allow you to build your learning and development around your day. There are 4 strands to our Academy, chosen as priority areas to help you deliver for the department.

  • Policy and corporate skills
  • Line managers
  • Essential training
  • Leadership training

Civil Service Learning (CSL)

The CSL curriculum offers a mix of different types of learning so that civil servants can learn in a way that works for them. For example, many topics have some preparation (such as reading), a face-to-face workshop and a practical activity (so that learners can apply what they’ve learnt back in the workplace). As well as this, there is a wide variety of e-learning available in lots of areas.
