Flexible Working at QBE

QBE is focused on being a highly successful, prosperous and progressive company, and an effective developer of people.  It is recognised that dynamic, effective and value adding flexible work practices already exist within the Company and a practical approach to flexible working allows the potential for employees to be retained within the business, maintaining continuity of employment, commitment and contribution as life circumstances may change. 

All Employees have the right to be considered for flexible working by completing a ‘Flexible Working Application Form’.  Prioritised consideration will be given to requests from these employees who have the statutory right to apply for flexible working.

Examples of flexible working supported by the Company:

  • job-sharing -  Two part-time employees share the responsibility of one position. Such an arrangement allows employees to work regular and defined times, whilst giving them a more flexible working pattern. For such an arrangement to be considered, employees need to submit a joint request, explaining when both individuals would like to work and how tasks and responsibilities can be split between them
  • part-time working - Employees work fewer hours, either per day or per week, than those agreed in a standard contract. Salary, pension, holiday and other benefits are pro rated during this time.
  • voluntary-reduced working time - Employees may opt to work reduced hours for a determined period of time, returning to their full-time hours thereafter. Salary, pension, holiday and other benefits are pro rated during this time.
  • non-standard shift patterns - Employees can request to start earlier or later and finish earlier or later, according to their personal needs.
  • working beyond normal retirement age

National Work Life Balance Week & Our Work Life Balance Fair

During September and October 2016 QBE took part in celebrating and recognising the importance of 'Work/Life & Family' integration as part of our Diversity & Inclusion commitment. 

Across the world, all QBE divisions hosted an array of activities and initiatives that aim to: 

  • up-skill/educate employees in integrating work life responsibilities. 
  • raise awareness of critical issues and how to resolve them.
  • increase employee morale and the experience of working at QBE. 
  • support the establishment of a caring and inclusive workplace culture. 

Celebrating our diverse global family

Work/Life & Family Month is an opportunity to recognise the diversity of our employees and provide support for integrating work/life commitments into our day-to-day roles. It also encourages QBE to strive to create a working environment that is more flexible, safe, and attractive for current and prospective employees. 

Work/Life Balance Fair

In October 2016 we hosted a Work/Life Balance Fair with webinars for colleagues who were unable to attend. There were two speaker sessions who discussed what is a work life balance for you, changing your lifestyle, priority management, life management skills and the employee assistance programme. 

There were also qualified masseuses, free healthy smoothies, a raffle, and information from the Pride network and The QBE Circle network.
