Welcome to VERCIDA website.
Skip to main contentDurham University is very inclusive and supportive of students and staff of all faiths. Our campus community is made up of people from 156 different nationalities and many different religions, so wherever you are from and whatever your beliefs we can accommodate you.
The University provides a number of facilities for its main religious communities through its Collegiate system.
Chaplains
Our chaplains offer faith support to different communities across colleagues and students from any faith or no faith.
Chaplains are an integral part of the welfare provision and pastoral support that the University offers both to staff and students. Chaplains at Durham are either based in Colleges where their care is for all members of College, or they work across the University where the Chaplain usually represents a particular denomination or faith community (though they are still available to everyone).
University is a formative place. It can be a time in life that raises questions about identity, belief and your own personal values. Chaplains are here to help you explore these kinds of questions. They are also available to encourage those of faith and those looking to learn about faith.
Buddhism
There are popular and active Buddhist and Meditation societies on campus and easy to reach places of worship in the local area. There is a Buddhist Centre in Newcastle which runs regular events and weekly mindfulness classes on campus.
Christianity
Both Durham City and University have a strong Christian heritage - as testified by Durham's magnificent cathedral. There are many Christian churches located in Durham, including Anglican, Catholic, Methodist, Baptist and United Reform denominations. Many of our colleges have a Christian chaplain and multi-denominational chapels with regular Sunday services. These colleges will also often hold special celebrations, such as carol services and other events, held throughout the year.
Islam
The University is able to offer services to support Islamic students, including Halal food in most colleges. We also offer self-contained accommodation for women in the Shepherd Wing of St Mary's College and can provide single-sex flats in some of our self-catering accommodation at Josephine Butler College, Ustinov College, Stephenson College, John Snow Colleges and St Cuthbert's Society.
Durham has a large and active Islamic Society with a dedicated Muslim Prayer Room on Old Elvet in the centre of Durham City. This room is used weekly, throughout the year, for Friday prayers as well as festivals and celebrations.
We are currently building a dedicated Muslim prayer facility located next to the heart of the campus. We hope for this to be available for use by the summer of 2018.
Judaism
The University has a large and active Jewish Society and holds weekly events. The University has a Jewish chaplain and offers self-contained accommodation for women in the Shepherd Wing of St Mary's College and can provide single-sex flats in some of our self-catering accommodation at Josephine Butler College, Ustinov College, Stephenson College, John Snow College and St Cuthbert's Society.
Our main meal provisions, in catered colleges, and self-catering kitchens in non-catered colleges are not Kosher but alternative arrangements may be possible for individuals if required.
