Corporate Social Responsibility at HarperCollins

At HarperCollins we feel incredibly fortunate to work in the publishing industry, and we also believe that our work should be a force for good in the world.

Below you can find out a little more about how we endeavour to make a difference in our community and the wider world.

Literacy and Inclusion

Literacy - particularly children's literacy - means a lot to us at HarperCollins. We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the pleasure of reading, and we have consistently championed organisations which work to make a more literate society.

HarperCollins is on the steering committee for Save The Children's 'Read On. Get On.' campaign, which is working to ensure that, by 2025, every child is a confident reader by the age of 11. Most recently our Children's division teamed up with Save The Children and Sainsbury's to produce their Christmas ad campaign, starring Judith Kerr's classic character Mog. We produced an exclusive book for the campaign - Mog's Christmas Calamity - with all proceeds going to 'Read On. Get On'. So far the campaign has raised over £1.5m for children's literacy.

We've also helped literacy charity Beanstalk launch their Children's Literacy Charter, our staff volunteer as reading helpers in local schools, and we donate thousands of books each year to libraries in Africa with Book Aid International.

Whizz Kidz

HarperCollins UK’s corporate charity partner is Whizz-Kidz, which works to transform the lives of disabled children and young people by providing vital mobility equipment, skills and training they need at the right time in their lives. As well as dedicating our internal fundraising to Whizz-Kidz in 2016, we're also creating a programme of work experience placements for disabled young people at HarperCollins.

Community

At HarperCollins we're keen to support the causes about which our staff and authors are passionate. Whether they are running a marathon, cycling 100 miles or putting on a bake sale, we promote their causes and match-fund where we can. Our Executive Job Swap has raised funds for Macmillan Cancer Support - an amazing charity which holds a special place for our staff in Glasgow - and we also support their World's Biggest Coffee Morning campaign every year.

Corporate

As a part of News Corp, we're able to partner with our sister companies on a wide variety of projects and initiatives, not least for corporate social responsibility. In 2015, alongside News UK and Dow Jones, we created 'News Corp Giving' - a campaign which saw the allocation of £100,000 to a range of local and nationwide charitable organisations, as voted for by our staff. Recipients of funding included London's Air Ambulance, the Children's Hospice Association Scotland and the Alzheimer's Society. In 2016, funds were donated to Rainbow Trust Children's Charity, Walking With The Wounded, and Solace Women's Aid.

Environment

We know that we have a responsibility to minimise our impact on the environment, even as we grow our business. That’s why we bring rigorous standards and policies to our business practices.

At HarperCollins, we take paper procurement and usage very seriously, with environmentally sustainable fibre use, reduction of pollution and the conservation of natural resources through recycling and waste reduction absolutely central to our printing activities. We are continually reviewing and strengthening our book paper sourcing policy and reacting to input from all independent environmental organisations. We appreciate and respond to all advice and encouragement to continually move forward and strengthen our environmental policies.
