Welcome to VERCIDA website.
Skip to main contentTo enable our people to utilise their skills and expertise to support the social, environmental and economic health of our communities, we have formalised a volunteer programme in the UK.
Atkins supports volunteer days in the UK. So all of our employees can take up to 2 days each year to take part in fundraising activities, carry out community work or whatever is close to their heart. Listen to Laura Wells talk about her experience below.
Mark Scorer, principal geotechnical engineer uses the earthquake knowledge he’s gained from working at Atkins to dedicate his own time to take part in ACHILLES 17, an Earthquake Disaster Response Urban Search and Rescue exercise in Switzerland. Watch Mark's video below.
Some of the volunteering projects that have made best use of our skills include work with relief organisations such as Engineers Without Borders and RedR, the international disaster relief charity.
Teams of graduates have raised funds for RedR in a variety of ways, from sponsored swims, and cycles and climbs, to weekly Spanish food runs, homemade chutney sales and gigs. Our graduates have not only to reach their fundraising targets, but also raised awareness of RedR’s disaster relief work. The combined fundraising activities of the 40 teams raised £34,550 for RedR. We also competed with other teams from our industry in the RedR football and tag rugby tournaments.
Cycling Challenge
Some of our people participated in a Dutch cycling event involving cycling one of the main mountains in the Tour de France, the Alpe d’Huez, a number of times in succession, to raise money for the Dutch Cancer Association. Another team completed a charity bike ride covering 900 miles from Monaco to London, including 48000 feet of climbing over the alps, in only ten days, in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Association and Cancer Research.
Energy Challenge
Colleagues from Energy UK took part in an Engage Gears, Brains and Feet Challenge in the Peak District. The challenge included a series of engineering based problems for teams to solve, testing their mental agility under pressure. Funds raised help to change the lives of vulnerable young people.
Another group from Energy participated in the Atkins 100 Challenge for the Youth Adventure Trust, a charity providing opportunities for 11- and 12-year-olds to attend Mountain Camp in the Brecon Beacons as part of a three year Youth Adventure Programme. Many of those on camp have never been away from home before. They set their own personal development objectives and are taking part in activities such as climbing, caving, gorge walking and an overnight mountain expedition.
