Carers Leave at Association of British Insurers

The aim of carer's leave is to help ABI employees who are also unpaid carers balance those competing priorities more easily.

Carer's leave gives you the right to take time off work where you are providing unpaid care to family members, friends, neighbours or others because of long term (i.e. longer than 6 months) physical or mental health, disability and/or problems related to age.

We view 'care' as a broad concept, due to the varied and changing nature of the care requirements of individuals, and therefore it will include:

  • Providing personal support. This could include keeping someone company and keeping an eye out for them;
  • Providing practical support. This could include making meals, going shopping and doing other household tasks;
  • Helping with official or financial matters. This could include doing paperwork, dealing with "officials", collecting a pension and paying bills; and
  • Providing personal and medical care. This could include collecting prescriptions, giving medication and washing, dressing and other personal care.
