Apprenticeships at Thames Water

We offer two kinds of apprenticeship at Thames Water:

1 - Electrical & Instrumentation Apprenticeship (E/I)

Our Electrical and Instrumentation apprentices manage processes which have one end result but affect multiple other processes along the way. You will monitor these processes to check that the outputs are correct and that the inputs aren’t having any negative effects.

As an E/I apprentice, you’ll be placed on a structured four year programme. You’ll be trained to help control all the instruments and systems we have on our sites using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s). You’ll also be working on the computer systems which monitor and control all aspects of our water and wastewater treatment, collection and supply and how they’re performing across the network.

By the end of the apprenticeship you will have gained hands on experience and knowledge in Mechanics, Electrics and Instrumentation and will be able to both assess how our processes are performing and correct any faults you may come across along the way. You will also be able to look at the wider network to see any knock-on effects that have happened as a result of changes made.

For this apprenticeship we need people with a logical thought process who want to gain hands on experience. This apprenticeship will give you a great opportunity to learn the essentials of ICA and this is a huge growth area for the future with more and more companies turning to PLC’s and SCADA systems to control their sites.

Some of your typical daily tasks may include:

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance in accordance with the maintenance plans
  • Carrying out fault diagnosis and repair of electrical equipment.
  • Carrying out emergency breakdown repairs
  • Carrying out installation work of equipment and plant modification
  • Reading and understanding electrical drawings, identifying parts and components.

2 - Mechanical & Electrical (M/E)

Studying Mechanical and Electrical disciplines you will be working on our sites alongside around 2500 of our 5000 employees. You will be placed on a four year structured programme with the first year spent studying at college gaining the knowledge and skills to be able to join one of our dedicated operational teams at the heart of the business.

This is a really hands on role so you must have a real passion for finding out how things work and making improvements to them. Our technology and equipment is on a huge scale and this offers a really exciting opportunity to learn and develop your skills and knowledge on some exciting projects.

We are recruiting our skilled technicians of the future and are offering a great opportunity for anybody looking to start a career within the water industry. You will be learning about new and innovative technologies that will improve the way we work at Thames Water for years to come.
