It is estimated that 21 million people are victims of forced labour all over the world. In 2010, the UN introduced plans to fight against trafficking and exploitation by boosting development and strengthening security. The UN Voluntary Trust Fund for victims of trafficking was set up to provide protection to victims.

The General Assembly held a meeting in 2013 to appraise the Global Plan of Action against human trafficking. It was also decided that 30th July would be the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons to raise awareness of the cause and promote the rights of the victims.

To join the fight against trafficking, employers can:

  • Take steps to ensure that supply chains are free from slavery
  • Offer volunteer days for employees to offer services and skills for anti-trafficking campaigns
  • Provide training for employees to enable them to report suspicious activity
  • Partner with other organisations to promote anti-trafficking strategies

We believe that everyone has the right to freedom and a peaceful life. By taking as many steps as possible, employers can work to create change and help others to experience the freedom so many of us take for granted.
