We are hosting our first ‘TechWomen Hackathon’ at our offices in MediaCity, Salford on Saturday 15 July. It’s a free, one-day innovation event. The day offers women software engineers (from both inside and outside the BBC) a chance to take part in an interesting and fun challenge, work collaboratively and learn from each other.

On the day you will:

  • Hear more about the APIs and Services that power BBC iPlayer, Britain’s third most popular brand and one of the BBC’s most used products
  • Work as part of a team to develop a new feature for iPlayer, improve a user journey or enhance part of the user experience
  • Or, if that’s not quite exciting enough, you could also have a go at building your own iPlayer

The Hackathon will be an opportunity for you to talk to existing staff and hiring managers and get a real sense of what it’s like to work in tech at the BBC. You don’t have to be looking for a new job to attend but hopefully the day will inspire you to want to apply for future opportunities in our teams.

About BBC Design & Engineering

The BBC Design & Engineering (D&E) department drives the technological developments that craft the future of the BBC. From innovation to creation, our talented teams help to keep us at the cutting edge of the broadcast industry. The products and services we deliver -from BBC iPlayer to BBC Online - are state of the art and it’s an exciting, rewarding and dynamic place to work.

We also have responsibility for the creation of websites, apps and games for propositions including:

  • Sport
  • Children's
  • News
  • Education

We have development teams based across the UK, predominantly in London and Salford, and are currently recruiting for technical roles.

To make the best products we need the best people and we also want to make sure that our teams accurately reflect our audiences. Diversity and inclusion, including building a gender balanced workforce, is really important to us. This is why this particular event is only open to women – because they are currently underrepresented within the division.

In order to get the most from the Hackathon you will need to have:

  • Experience in software analysis, design & development
  • Computer science/software engineering related degree or other relevant education
  • Knowledge of modern computer languages & frameworks such as Java, JavaScript, Node.JS, Scala, iOS, Android, Swift, Python, HTML, CSS, SQL, NoSQL, REST, Ruby etc… (Please note that we’re not expecting you to be familiar with all of these – just a couple of them)

If you meet this description and would like to attend this free event, please send your CV and a brief explanation about why you’d like to take part (100 words or less) to [email protected]. Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
