Welcome to VERCIDA website.
Skip to main contentExtraordinary stories of refugees told through the every day objects which reflect their experiences.
Our annual exhibition returns this October with a series of portraits and interviews featuring Breaking Barriers clients, all of whom are refugees or from a refugee background. This collection tells the stories of their lives, journeys and personal dreams. All of the people featured chose an item of importance which represents their sense of belonging in a new community and reflects their experiences, values and hopes for the future. From birds which symbolise freedom to swimming medals in recognition of achievement and dedication each piece represents something different to the individual.
Curated by Breaking Barriers Ambassador, Juliet Stevenson, Belonging features 10 people who have been supported through our Employment services. A collective of photographers and journalists worked with clients to tell their stories through photographic portraits and their own words. The exhibition portrays each person as they want to be seen, as individuals with different perspectives to share and in a positive narrative all too often missing from refugee coverage in mainstream media.
Through this exhibition we invite you to share the extraordinary experiences of these people and to consider what gives you a sense of belonging in your own life.
The exhibition will run from Tuesday 29th October until Saturday 2nd November at Proud Gallery Central.
Please note: This exhibition includes themes of a sensitive nature.
Belonging is generously supported by:
