UK Atomic Energy Authority

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is developing nuclear fusion as a major new source of safe, reliable low-carbon energy.Fusion – the process that powers the Sun – could give us abundant reserves of cleaner energy. UKAEA is a world leader in the race to bring it to the electricity grid.

UKAEA manages the UK’s national fusion programme at Culham near Oxford. Our scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe on the technology for fusion power stations.

A new £220M design project led by UKAEA could see the first fusion powerplant built in the UK by 2040. To enable this, we have created a set of research facilities tackling the big challenges on the path to commercial fusion energy:

  • MAST Upgrade: In 2020, our latest fusion research machine, MAST Upgrade, will go online. It will explore a promising concept for compact reactors and help to answer key fusion science questions.
  • Materials Research Facility: a national facility for university and industry users who are developing materials for fusion and fission reactors.
  • RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments): a centre for R&D and commercial activities in the field of Robotics and Autonomous Systems.
  • Fusion Technology: new facilities at Culham and at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, Rotherham, for testing engineering components for fusion reactors.
  • H3AT (Hydrogen-3 Advanced Technology): a first-of-a-kind research centre for studying tritium, one of the fuels needed for fusion powerplants.

UKAEA also hosts the world’s largest fusion machine, JET (Joint European Torus), at Culham for scientists around Europe. This work is vital in preparing for the first ever reactor-scale fusion experiment – the $20B international ITER project, now being built in France.
