Welcome to VERCIDA website.
Skip to main contentThe UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is developing nuclear fusion as a major new source of safe, reliable low-carbon energy.Fusion – the process that powers the Sun – could give us abundant reserves of cleaner energy. UKAEA is a world leader in the race to bring it to the electricity grid.
UKAEA manages the UK’s national fusion programme at Culham near Oxford. Our scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe on the technology for fusion power stations.
A new £220M design project led by UKAEA could see the first fusion powerplant built in the UK by 2040. To enable this, we have created a set of research facilities tackling the big challenges on the path to commercial fusion energy:
UKAEA also hosts the world’s largest fusion machine, JET (Joint European Torus), at Culham for scientists around Europe. This work is vital in preparing for the first ever reactor-scale fusion experiment – the $20B international ITER project, now being built in France.
