Through research, standards, and analysis we help our members deliver a better, safer railway.

We are a rail industry body which brings all parts of the rail system together to support shared decisions, products and services, to help industry drive out unnecessary cost, improve business performance and develop long-term strategy.

RSSB is built on strong technical capability, and the enabling of collaborative industry engagement for the benefit of the whole rail system.

We are a centre of excellence valued by our members and stakeholders as an essential contributor to their success.

From risk models to Rule Book, from research projects to innovation initiatives, from data to decision making, we provide a powerful portfolio of knowledge services to the rail industry in Great Britain.

We are owned and driven by the rail industry itself, with nearly 100 members including infrastructure managers, passenger train operating companies, freight train operating companies, rolling stock owning companies, infrastructure contractors, and the supply chain.

Virtually all of RSSB’s products and services are overseen, governed, commissioned or published by a cross industry group, involving representatives of RSSB members and other stakeholders.

Our services to support the industry are wide-ranging and include things designed to improve industry performance, standards, risk analysis and safety reporting, research, development and innovation.

RSSB will avoid unlawful discrimination in all aspects of employment.  This includes recruitment, promotion, opportunities for training, pay and benefits, discipline and selection for redundancy.  Every employee is required to assist RSSB to meet its commitment to provide equal opportunities in employment and avoid unlawful discrimination.

Acts of discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation against employees or customers are disciplinary offences.  These will be dealt with under RSSB’s disciplinary procedure.  Discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation may constitute gross misconduct and could lead to dismissal without notice.

Working practices

RSSB recognises that a healthy work life balance is important to all our employees.  Our unique role in the rail industry is conducive to diverse working practices.  We are proud that about 20% of our workforce have an agreed flexible working arrangement, with further informal arrangements agreed at a local level.

Together with our generous family friendly policies, we are proud that all our employees who embarked on family leave in 2017/18 have successfully returned. We are firmly committed to ensuring our employees continue to enjoy a healthy work-life balance.


Our remuneration framework is gender neutral. All our roles are evaluated to eliminate gender bias. As a result, we are confident that both our male and female employees are paid at a similar level.


We encourage continuous professional development for all our employees. Our planned activities for 2019 will strengthen our partnership with Women In Rail (WR). Our employees continue to participate in the WR mentoring programme both as mentors and mentees. This year we are also supporting WR's Pro-Bono Fund, which is aimed at new entrants or returners to the rail industry.  We are pleased to be hosting a number of WR events, including the launch of the mentoring scheme, at our central London offices.

Diversity and inclusion

RSSB has two groups, the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group and Women at RSSB. Looking at the broader diversity context, these groups comprise a cross-section of our employees. By creating a space for these groups, we aim to champion diversity initiatives, building a more diverse and inclusive culture at RSSB.


At RSSB we continue to broaden our reach to attract and recruit a diverse workforce. Our approach to attracting talent is constantly evolving and we use professional job boards such as LinkedIn and WISE. We actively reach out to a diverse pool of talent to raise awareness of opportunities at RSSB. Our aspiration is to leverage RSSB's unique position in the rail industry to promote diversity, particularly in technical and engineering roles.
