Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)

Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)

The RTPI is one of the largest professional institutes for planners worldwide. We employ approximately 85 staff across a wide range of professions in our offices in London and Edinburgh and working from home. The RTPI promotes spatial planning and develops and shapes policy affecting the built environment while working to raise professional standards and supporting its members through continuous education, training and development.

Planning Aid England, part of the RTPI, provides free, independent and professional planning advice to individuals and communities who cant afford to pay professional fees. Our campaigning covers a wide range of issues, helping to raise the profile of the profession and generate awareness of the invaluable contribution planners make to building sustainable communities and helping to drive economic growth.

As an employer, we are committed to equality and diversity and recognise that our future success depends entirely on our staff and their continuing development.

More about RTPI

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

A diverse and inclusive profession is central to the future of planning. To be an effective and sustainable profession, we must be genuinely representative of the society in which we work. This includes recognising and addressing the need for broader visibility of diversity at all levels of the profession, from entry to the most senior.  As part of the RTPI Corporate Strategy we have set out a vision:

To be, and promote the planning profession to be, as diverse as the communities it represents, to act inclusively, treating everyone fairly and seeking to provide a culture which delivers the best outcomes for the diverse society in which and for whom we work.

To realise this vision in February 2020 we launched a 10-year action plan - CHANGE - which set out key themes and actions that will help make that vision a reality. You can follow progress on the work we are doing here.

Supporting a diverse and inclusive profession

To be a truly diverse and inclusive profession then not only do we have to make sure that we create as many accessible routes for talent to enter the profession as possible but also that we support that talent and make sure that we create an environment and culture for everyone to thrive. We know from research that despite great strides having been made in gender balance across the profession women remain underrepresented at senior levels.  For example a 2020 survey undertaken by Women in Planning of 379 planning consultancies found that 17% of Chief Executives and Directors were women.

Whilst we do not, yet, have a clear picture in terms of planners from planners of Black African, Caribbean and East or South Asian heritage, feedback from members is that it is a similar situation.

The profession should be actively looking to do better.  Leadership and culture is a key strand of the CHANGE action plan and a mentoring programme, NURTURE has recently been launched.
