General Pharmaceutical Council

Overview

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) is the independent regulator for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy premises in Great Britain.

We work to assure and improve standards of care for people using pharmacy services.

What we do

Our role is to protect the public and give them assurance that they will receive safe and effective care when using pharmacy services.

We set standards for pharmacy professionals and pharmacies to enter and remain on our register.

We seek assurance that pharmacy professionals and pharmacies continue to meet our standards, including by inspecting pharmacies.

We act to protect the public and to uphold public confidence in pharmacy if there are concerns about a pharmacy professional or pharmacy on our register.

Through our work we help to promote professionalism, support continuous improvement and assure the quality and safety of pharmacy.

Working for us

At GPhC we believe our staff are our greatest asset. We are committed to being an attractive and supportive employer and we work hard to provide staff with the environment, tools and training to ensure they are able to work safely and effectively. We exist to foster and enable the excellence in our people that will support the GPhC in achieving its strategic ambitions.

We regulate pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacies in Great Britain. We work to assure and improve standards of care for people using pharmacy services.

We are a respected regulatory body, as an organisation we continually adapt and improve how we work in response to changes in pharmacy, so that the way we regulate continues to be efficient and effective.

Being part of our team

At the GPhC, you will find a career in a stimulating and balanced work environment, with opportunities to develop and progress – in an organisation that really makes a difference.

We value our workforce as the cornerstone to the current and future success of the GPhC. We are proud of our diverse and inclusive culture and are committed to ‘holding ourselves to the same standards we expect of others’.

More about GENERAL PHARMACEUTICAL COUNCIL

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

The General Pharmaceutical Council is committed to promoting equality, valuing diversity and being inclusive in all our work as a health professions regulator and an employer.

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are central to everything that we do and are woven throughout our Vision 2030 and Strategic Plan, which set out our roadmap for the future of pharmacy regulation.

To make sure that EDI is fully integrated in all our work, we have recently finalised a proposal for the first GPhC EDI Strategy. The draft strategy identifies three key themes underpinned by a series of EDI objectives and a set of strategic outcomes to help us evaluate impact and measure the success.

Our governing Council agreed that we should consult on Delivering equality, improving diversity and fostering inclusion: our draft strategy 2021 – 2026 on 11 March 2021. We are currently consulting on the draft strategy with stakeholders, patients and members of the public. Follow this link to have your say.

Our draft strategy is designed to:

  • Support us to achieve the GPhC Vision 2030 of ‘Safe and effective pharmacy care at the heart of healthier communities’
  • Set out how we will work together and with others to transform our approach to EDI
  • Help shape our day to day work in a holistic way, ensuring that we are continually thinking about the specific needs of the different groups and people that we work with

Wheel with the three themes of our strategy. Theme 1 is ‘To make regulatory decisions that are demonstrably fair and lawful, and so free from discrimination and bias’. Theme 2 is ‘To use our standards to proactively help tackle discrimination in all pharmacy settings and to make sure everyone can access person-centred care, fostering equality in health outcomes’ Theme 3 is ‘To lead by example and demonstrate best practice within our organisation, holding ourselves to the same high standards we expect of others’.
