Arup

About ARUP  - A world of opportunity

Applying your imagination. Exploring possibilities. Solving problems. Every day at Arup is different. Join us and shape a better world. At Arup, you will work alongside some of the industry’s most talented people, who all share your ambition to make a difference. You’ll get to work on projects that push people’s expectations of what’s possible, from inspiring buildings to structures that shape our future.  We operate in 33 countries around the world, acting as a giant collaborative network of experts, mobilising to solve problems in new ways. The best ideas come from creative dialogue. That’s why we encourage our people to deepen their understanding by working in new locations and different cultures. And wherever we are in the world, our shared aims and values keep us grounded in what really matters.

Designing an inclusive world

We want a built environment that works for everyone. This means understanding the needs of today’s population, and tomorrow’s. For us, inclusive design means ensuring everyone can use and enjoy a building, whatever their age, culture, disability, gender and family status.

Different people, shared values

We believe that when talented people collaborate, great things are possible. Arup hires people with proven skills and open minds. We are a diverse community of people with shared values, who believe there’s no limit to what we can achieve if we work together. Back in 1970 our founder, Ove Arup, spoke passionately about the value of a diverse workforce. Fifty years later, this belief remains central to how we operate and grow.

Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

We aspire to be – and work hard to be – an organisation which recruits, retains and develops a truly diverse workforce reflective of the communities we serve, and to be the kind of place where people are proud to work. Our values permeate every aspect of our organisation, from the expectations we have of leaders, to the opportunities our people should share, and the kinds of clients we work with. These nine, progressive commitments guide our decision-making every day.

More about ARUP

Our Values

At Arup, you will work alongside some of the most talented people, who share your ambition to make a difference.

You’ll get to work on projects that push people’s expectations of what’s possible, from inspiring buildings to structures that will shape our future.

The values that set us apart

Arup’s shared values, like our firm’s name, are derived from the beliefs and convictions of our founder, the engineer and philosopher Sir Ove Arup.

  • Quality of work

Ove Arup was always clear: money is not our main aim, it’s quality that comes first. There are many ways to define ‘quality’ but whatever we do, we aim to produce the most thoughtful, creative and sustainable solutions – for our clients and the communities we work in.
  • Total architecture

Our spirit is collaborative. Working life at Arup is never about titles, we listen in order to create and learn. ‘Total architecture’ simply means bringing everyone together, to benefit from their experience and insights. It also means we constantly evolve, adopting new disciplines, new people, and new ideas.
  • Humane organisation

Ove Arup’s goal was that we should always remain a humane and friendly organisation, however large we became. You’ll find people at all levels of seniority are willing to help, discuss or share their experience. A humane organisation is also one focused on working hard to improve the lives of people our work touches.
  • Straight and honourable dealings

Innovative and inspiring work is always built on trust. That’s why we expect the highest moral standards from our people – work of quality cannot be achieved any other way. A shared commitment to our values is how we produce great work for our clients, with enduring value for the communities around us.
  • Social usefulness

Having a greater purpose than financial gain was how Ove always believed Arup’s work could remain inspiring. Today, social usefulness means many things for us, from pushing designs to be as sustainable and inclusive as possible, to our people’s commitment to community engagement.
  • Reasonable prosperity

Money might not have been Ove Arup’s main priority for the firm, but he recognised the value of rewarding talent and remaining a great employer. Today we offer competitive salaries and benefits, wherever in the world you work for us. And as a membership organisation, we share our profits with our people twice annually.

Diversity & Inclusion

Our values permeate every aspect of our organisation, from the expectations we have of leaders, to the opportunities our people should share, and the kinds of clients we work with. These nine, progressive commitments guide our decision-making every day.

Sir Ove believed work was only valuable when it had something higher to strive for. We continue to embody that idea – that our work is truly profitable when it shapes a better world. Today, across the world, our people use their skills and expertise to help us reach for greater goals.

Equal. Diverse. Inclusive.

We believe in fair treatment for all. As an ever-growing worldwide community of talented practitioners, the diversity of our people is central to our success. Find out how our nine commitments are leading to an Arup that gives all our people a voice.

Our values permeate every aspect of our organisation, from the expectations we have of leaders, to the opportunities our people should share, and the kinds of clients we work with. These nine, progressive commitments guide our decision-making every day.

1. Leadership

We will foster and develop leaders, and an approach to leadership, that is diverse, understands and responds to the communities we serve, celebrates difference and has inclusion at its heart.

2. Thriving

We will make our environment one where excellent people belong, thrive and progress offering tailored career support, proactively seeking opportunities to develop our future leaders, and being open to challenge and change.

3. Learning

Our members will be well-educated in the issues facing their colleagues and clients who belong to minority groups, will understand their responsibility to work inclusively and promote diversity, and will celebrate difference and the opportunities it brings.

4. Clarity

We will be clear about what good behaviour looks like and won’t tolerate discrimination, micro-aggressions or bad behaviour of any kind. We will foster a culture in which we are able to have candid conversations and challenge one another with courage and kindness, and where concerns can be raised and addressed freely and safely.

5. Clients

We intend to work with and for clients with whom we share a common purpose, and who share our commitment to reducing inequalities and promoting fairness.

6. Work

We will consider inclusion, as an element of sustainable development, in all aspects of our projects –from bid, through inception to delivery. We will always guide our work, and those involved in it, onwards towards even more diversity and an ever more inclusive approach because we know this produces better outcomes.

7. Influence

We will use our reputation and standing and influence to lead on and advocate for improving diversity, equity and inclusion in our sector, in the built environment and in the wider societies within which we operate.

8. Future talent

We will adopt an approach to finding, attracting, selecting and recruiting talent that brings the very best people into Arup from as diverse a pool of talent as possible.

9. Measurement

We will develop an approach to measuring and reporting on diversity, including racial diversity, that is respectful of our different cultural contexts and geographies and enables us to share a clear picture of our current position and to track our progress.
