Dr Beth Bell session regarding body image

Dr Beth Bell attended York Explore on the 15th March 2019. She explained how media, social media and technology shapes how we think and feel about our bodies in this special event for Mental Health Awareness Week.

Dr Beth T. Bell is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at York St John University. She specialises in the role of media, social media and technology in the lives of adolescents and young adults, with a specific focus on social media and mental health. She is the founder of Body Image in the Digital Age initiative, which provides teachers with the knowledge and skills to promote positive technology use and positive body image in schools. In this talk, she will explain how social media and technology are involved in the transmission of dominant appearance and body-related messages, and the impact of such messages on the body image, mental health and physical health of individuals.

This is a special event for Mental Health Awareness Week. Young people, parents, carers, teachers and anyone who has a body are all welcome to come along.

York St John is one of two universities supporting #21by21, a national campaign to train 21k sports coaches in mental health awareness by 2021. Professor Andy Hill is leading the University’s involvement, alongside other key partner organisations being led by the Sport for Development Coalition. Further information about #21by21 can be found here
