Young Carers Awareness Day 2017

Today is Young Carers Awareness day (YCAD) 2017, which recognises the UK’s 700,000 young carers.

Carers Trust created the campaign to highlight the challenges that young carers face. They want to emphasise the need to have the right support in place for these children, who often do not realise their hopes and dreams.

Therefore, this year’s theme is “When I grow up” and is all about helping young carers achieve their dream jobs or career.

Being a young carer can have a big impact on the things that are important to growing up. It can affect the young person’s health, social life and self-confidence, as well as often causing many young carers to struggle to balance their education and their caring responsibilities. In a survey, 39% said that nobody at school was aware of their caring role and 26% had experienced bully at school. 1 in 20 young carers miss school because of their caring responsibilities. This all contributes toward them not realising their full potential or achieving their dream career.
