It’s Young Carers Action Day this Wednesday 16th March. To mark the day we'd like to share Lucy's story - one of our amazing young carers.
“I’m Lucy and I’m 24 years old. I’ve worked for Aviva for 3 years and currently work as a Junior Product Owner within the My Aviva team.
Last April my Nanny (89) had a severe stroke that left her with Aphasia (inability to speak correctly, read and write), dementia and inability to recognise objects. Since the stroke my sisters and I have been heavily involved with caring responsibilities not only for my Nan but for my Grandad (93) who has undiagnosed dementia. Nanny was always the one who looked after him and he has unfortunately gone quite downhill since her stroke.
Our caring responsibilities include day to day jobs such as supporting cooking, food shopping, cleaning and getting them out of the house, as well as ensuring they have the correct medications and attend their regular doctor’s appointments.
It’s sometimes challenging to juggle caring responsibilities with a full-time role and having my own life. Aviva and my line manager have made this so much easier offering carers leave, flexible working and being understanding of my responsibilities.
I’m able to take longer lunches to support with shopping and picking up prescriptions and occasionally will work from Nan and Grandad’s house to be around for home visits. I am really proud to work for Aviva and to be part of the carers' community.”
Thank you for sharing your story Lucy. You're amazing.
