Working to Make Equality Happen: Four Equality Seminars

Working to Make Equality Happen: Four Equality Seminars

This prestigious series of events is designed to explore the connections between the protected characteristics identified in The Equality Act (EA) 2010. We have asked some of the most progressive thinkers within their fields to examine how they have built dialogues to advance equality and diversity, moving from the comfort zones of protected characteristics with which they work to consider the implications for other protected characteristics and for equality and diversity generally.

Too often equality issues have been misunderstood and have been set up in opposition to each other. Our purpose is to see what we have in common and how we can support, understand and have dialogue with each other. These seminars are intended for people who work within the field of equality and diversity and may be specialists in one or more of the protected characteristics, whether on legal or practical issues or both. We are including social class within each theme because it is our belief that class has a bearing on the social and economic opportunities available to each person.

We have chosen four themes relating to religion and belief, sexual orientation, race and disability, to consider how specific issues in the one context overlap with similar issues in the histories and experiences of other groups. The experiences of most equality and diversity practitioners is that there is much misunderstanding and confusion about what the law says, what is intended by the EA 2010 and how these issues will affect equality and diversity practice. Key speakers will share with us the work they have developed within their chosen field and how it interfaces with other protected characteristics to broaden their understanding of religion and belief, sexual orientation, race and disability. The series will open with a seminar with a Religion and Belief theme in November in London. February will see the seminar on LGBT issues in Birmingham, the one in March is on Race in Bristol and finally Disability will be in May in Leeds.

The format of the day will ensure active participation of delegates after keynote speakers have presented their perspective.

Our intention is to move the equality agenda out of the silos and back to what the law says and intends, so that we can all contribute to advancing equality universally.
