Working to Make Equality Happen: Disability

Working to Make Equality Happen: Disability

The professional body of equality & diversity practitioners
Working to Make Equality Happen Four free ground-breaking equality seminars in four cities

These four exciting events in London, Birmingham, Bristol, and Leeds are designed to explore the connections between the ‘protected characteristics’ identified in The Equality Act 2010. We have asked some of the most progressive thinkers within their fields to examine how they have built dialogues to advance equality and diversity, moving from the comfort zones of the protected characteristics with which they work to consider the implications for other groups and for equality and diversity generally.

Too often equality issues have been misunderstood and have been set up in opposition to each other. Our purpose is to see what we have in common and how we can support, understand and have dialogue with each other. These seminars are intended for people who work within the field of equality and diversity and may be specialists in one or more of the protected characteristics, whether on legal or practical issues or both.

The next seminar: Disability

This seminar will explore how equality and diversity practitioners can promote good practice in the area of disability. The Equality Act 2010 has extended the rights for disabled people in areas of employment, service provision and education, although many of the benefits have yet to be realised.

Harassment of disabled people and hate crime is still prevalent. So one of the challenges is how to raise awareness and build solidarity to stamp out these behaviours. The Paralympics undoubtedly raised the profile of disabled people and showed them in a very positive light. Public attitudes will have improved but changes for many disabled people are barely discernible. There will be panels of key speakers who will share with us the work they and their organisations have developed within their chosen field and how it intersects with other protected characteristics

The IEDP are proud to welcome Sheekha Rajani, Account Director and Board Member at DiversityJobs.co.uk to speak about her work in the Diversity and Inclusion space.

There will be BSL interpreters at this event.

Places are free and will be allocated on a first come first served basis - booking is essential. The IEDP is grateful to Awards for All and DiversityJobs.co.uk for funding for this series of seminars.
