Women in Transport: Network Rail systems integration manager

100 Years of Women in Transport.

Cindy has worked in the transport industry for 36 years, having held a variety of roles during this time including project management support and a number of clerical roles.

How did you enter the transport industry?

I saw a job advertised in the paper for a Clerical Officer at the Telephone Enquiry Bureau at Birmingham New Street Station. It was working for British RaiI and it sounded like a job I could do so I applied, got the job and I’m still here 36 years later. During this time I have had a number of different roles, as working for a large organisation provides lots of opportunities to move around and take on new challenges. Roles I have had include project management support roles such as programme controls, project development, commercial management, project planning and project administration. I have also held a number of clerical roles dealing with the travelling public.

What does your job involve?

My role as a Systems Integration Manager in Infrastructure Projects Signalling involves introducing IT business change into my area of responsibility. In a nutshell I ensure that users have IT systems that meet their requirements so they can carry out their work in delivery of projects. Managing delivery of IT projects to users expectations is probably the most challenging aspect of the job. This is because I have little control over the changes to scope or timescales for the implementation of the corporate-led IT projects.

Why do you like working in transport?

I love the variety of different jobs that are available, the fantastic opportunities to move around the business and the dedicated people who work in it.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I am most proud of each and every step I have made throughout my career in transport which have brought me to my current role as a senior manager within the organisation.

What would your advice be to someone interested in your role?

If you are interested in a role as Systems Integration Manager you need to have a good knowledge of the business systems in use and have the ability to engage and influence users at all levels of the business. It’s a great job and especially gratifying when you are able to deliver the right systems to the right people.

How can we attract more young people into the industry?

We should be actively engaging with schools, targeting primary as well as secondary school students, using our own young employees in the industry to talk to students about career opportunities.
