Why Deafness Support Network is a great place to work
Category: disability, Achievements, Career Development, Deafness Support Network, deaf, communication barrier, deaf environment
I was first attracted to working at DSN because as a Deaf BSL user myself I felt this would be a great place to work as there would be no communication barrier, also I new they had a Deaf environment and this appealed to me and made me feel more confident in applying to work here. I knew there was a mix between Deaf and hearing staff, but the hearing staff are trained up to BSL Level 2 which means communication is always possible. I was also aware at DSN they have PCA, note takers and interpreters working there which means quick access for Deaf people.
I have been involved in DSN and continued to come back on different occasions for the past 22 years in various roles, this has included various roles such as support worker, 1-1 support for a young lady, outreach work, teaching and now part of the day centre team. Working for DSN throughout the years has given me many opportunities to excel at various roles.
I like most about my job role working at the day centre, I like to work with the clients here and see how staff support and encouragement can help them achieve their goals and aspirations. I have a good rapport with the clients and enjoy when they go on various day trips, this gives them mental stimulation and helps with their involvement in the community.
At DSN they offer training related to my job role, these are different courses and training and are offered when needed. As a Deaf BSL user there is always an interpreter there and sometimes when needed a note taker, this means the information is for all present and staff become more knowledgeable on the different training.
