My name is Akebe and I am 26 years old.
I firstly wanted to say that I was honoured when asked to write a piece about when I started working here, my job and about DSN as I always have the upmost praise for the company and the people involved.
It started when I was wanting to further my career in British Sign Language as I had just enrolled on the Level 6 Diploma in British Sign Language and I started looking at various jobs and roles across the country in October 2016. I went for various interviews at various organisations, company’s, schools and colleges and was offered around 3 different jobs which I was really interested in and was looking forward to deciding which I would prefer. I then saw an advert for a job at DSN as a PCA/Trainee Interpreter, I knew a few people who already worked at DSN so I was already aware about the organisation and I had studied under DSN from my pre Level 3 and up to my current course Level 6 Diploma. I was so excited about this interview and really wanted to excel and join the team at DSN as what could be better than working for a company that specifically focuses on a range of Deaf people and Deaf culture, I was then offered the job the next day I was so happy yet nervous at the same time.
I have now been working at DSN for nearly a year as my start date was January 3rd 2017, I would like to think I am very confident and competent in my job role and the work place which has been helped greatly by the staff and management at DSN.
I can quite often be working with various Deaf people in various buildings or settings, which makes the job challenging and interesting as everyday is not the same. I wouldn’t say there is one specific part I like best about my job role, I think everything that I do I gain great happiness and job satisfaction from this but providing access is the most important. In previous employment I have always struggled after weekends or holidays returning to work, yet with DSN I can honestly say I don’t wake up dreading to go to work I really do enjoy my job and most importantly the people and staff who are there.
I am a firm believer that in life it isn’t where you go or what you do, it’s about who is with you throughout that and it is great to have a good team that surrounds me at DSN. After all we spend more time with work colleagues than our families so I am so happy that DSN has such great people to be working with, I feel that is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job.
Not forgetting to mention my line manager who I cannot speak more highly of as she is irreproachable, she is one of the nicest people I have ever met and coming into work with support from a person like that there is no excuse to ever dislike working here.
There are lots of jobs and roles that need constant refresher training, updated training or development and I feel DSN really do excel when it comes to providing this. It is always in a comfortable, relaxed environment and again with access to all, when you are more comfortable and relaxed in the environment I feel I personally always learn quicker and feel it’s easier to take information in. Refreshments are always provided which lets be honest, is a must!
A nice cup of tea and biscuits to aid with any learning, then at lunch wonderful food with many variety’s and choices. Using my own past experience compared to other companies, I feel DSN has a great set up and all involved really try their upmost best for all involved in the company and this makes such a difference.
