What is it like working at Arts Council England?

Some of Art Council’s lovely staff have shared their thoughts and experiences about how it is such a great place to work.

Relationship Manager, Music

Hi, I'm Denys and I've been working part-time at Arts Council England for 11 years.

In 2006, I came across the job of music officer and the opportunity to support musician was one that I felt would help UK talent to realise their most exciting projects. The most rewarding aspect of the job for me is still the process of advising talented artists on exciting new work. As an artist myself I feel I am able to offer potential applicants my experience from both perspectives.

Outside of my work at the Arts Council; I have been a professional jazz musician for the past 25 years and, continue working as an artist, composer and educator to the present. This year has been a busy one (so far) with NPO’s assessments and in between, recording a new solo album on Edition Records entitled ‘The Late Trane’ for release in June 2017.

Kyla Booth-Lucking-Relationship Manager, Dance

I joined the Arts Council in 2015 as maternity cover for the Relationship Manager – Dance, South East role and have been here ever since!

Since working here I’ve been lucky to support a fantastic range of dance artists, companies and organisations. It’s really exciting to see artists benefit from my advice and have success with their applications to Grants for the Arts.

A large part of my time is spent either giving advice to potential applicants through surgeries or one-to-one advice or working closely with my National Portfolio client and the best part of my job is getting to see the work we’ve funded in action.

As well as my job, I enjoy walking on the beach, reading dystopian novels (Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood is a recent favourite) and zombie films.

Nick Birchill- Communications Officer

I joined the Arts Council in 2015 as an Administrator in the Customer Services team. Before then I’ve worked mostly in theatre, as an artist, producer and in front of house for a number of venues and organisations across the North.

Since working here, I’ve been lucky enough to join the Communications team as an Assistant and now as an Officer. I love the role. Coming from a creative background has really informed what I do, especially when developing National marketing campaigns and also producing content that tells stories about what we do.

I get to communicate our messages with the public and advocate the amazing work that the Arts Council supports on a daily basis whether it be via email, on our website or through our social media channels. I’m always trying to find fresh and exciting ways to spread the word about what we’re up to.

As well as my job, I also like low budget 80s horror films, mountaineering and Peter Gabriel.

Johanna Taylor-Operations Assistant

I am Operations Assistant for London and South East based in the London office. My work mainly consists of supporting the Area Teams with processing Grants for the Arts applications; supporting the business processes for the NPO application process; and other administrative things that I won’t bore you with.

I started working at the Arts Council in February and before that I completed a Masters at Nottingham University’s Business School after working in the programming team at Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Working here gives an interesting insight into how much time and in-depth consideration goes into each funding application and the complexity of public money management!

Peter Davison-Relationship Manager, Creative Media

I joined Arts Council England in 2015 as the Relationship Manager for Creative Media in the South East, having originally trained and worked as an actor, specialising in stage combat.

Prior to this job, I led on the Recreate Project for Eastleigh Borough Council, supporting UK and French artists to regenerate deprived areas through artist hubs. I know how life-changing Arts Council England’s funding can be, and I enjoy the opportunities my work provides to engage with artists from all disciplines and stages of their careers.

I genuinely enjoy helping people realise their projects, and I’ve supported a huge variety of work, from a high profile art and technology talent development scheme, to helping individual artists produce podcasts, digital art and virtual reality work.

Outside of work I write, and have had work published in Firewords Quarterly. I also practise martial arts, including Aikido and Shotokan Karate.
