View from the Top: Caroline Rookes, CEO Money Advice Service

Caroline Rookes, CEO of Money Advice Service, talks exclusively to the big I.D.E.A. about why working with DiversityJobs.co.uk is so important to their organisation.

1. If you were stuck in a lift and asked by a colleague, 'why is Diversity and Inclusion important to our organisation?' what would you say?

We live in an increasingly diverse world of customers, colleagues and communities. By recognising and reflecting that in our workforce, we are closer to our customers and better at understanding their diverse needs. This means we are in a better position to help people make the most of their money.
The Money Advice Service values diversity and works inclusively. This enables us to meet our core aim of helping ALL people take control of their money and to enhance their lives as a result.

2. Research confirms that customers value organisations that understand the diversity of their needs, both from a people and business perspective. How do you see your organisation working towards meeting the diverse needs of your customers?

Customers are at the heart of our business, everything we do is centred on helping people manage their money better. We work with a range of stakeholders, representing people from all walks of life so that we can understand and meet the needs of our customers.
The Money Advice Service exists to make a difference, and we can do that best by engaging effectively at every point where a customer, colleague or corporation may come across us.

To make sure we get it right, we use focus groups and testing teams to give us as many diverse views on the Money Advice Service as possible so that we can learn and grow from them. Some of these very interesting different perspectives can be seen in our ground breaking research Money Lives, which can be downloaded from our website.

3. You have been members of DiversityJobs.co.uk since 2013, why do you think it is vital for Employers such as the Money Advice Service to partner with organisations like ours?

The Money Advice Service partners with a range of organisations who are all specialists in their field, so that we can extend our reach to people who may not automatically think of us in the first instance. We also benefit from the wider perspective that organisations such DiversityJobs.co.uk brings in helping us to attract and retain high calibre staff.

4. What do you do as an organisation to support the needs of your employees, and why do you feel it is important to that ensure staff feel valued and well looked after?

We have a whole programme of employee engagement and support initiatives, both formal such as regular 121 time for staff and line managers, paid for learning opportunities and a confidential employee assistance service, and informal such as cake bake offs and other social / networking events. We test the effectiveness of our programme with regular staff surveys and feedback sessions.

5. Who is responsible for EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) in your organisation?

We have a named lead who sits on our Board, Lesley Robinson, Director of Corporate Services and Debt Advice Programme. However we believe we are all responsible for reflecting the Money Advice Service commitment to a diverse, positive, empowered, energetic place to work.
