COVID-19: Halting Business?

COVID-19: Halting or Benefiting Business?

In the current climate, businesses, and everybody else, are on edge.

Today we expect the news of school closures all over the country and with many workers already self-isolating we thought we’d give you some comfort that, when it comes to flexible and home working, it’s not all doom and gloom.

At VERCIDA, several of our staff work flexibly and often from home, it’s an initiative available for the whole team and for us, it works.

“I find it a lot more productive when my team flexibly work because they’re more focused on the work they do. They’re happier in their environment so I have less issues around unhappy workers, they also take less sick days,” said Lawrence, Head of Marketing at VERCIDA Group.

To accommodate and make a success of flexible, home and remote working, it is fair to say some adjustments must be made, but if they are, there are huge benefits to be gained.

“It’s not harder to manage flexible workers, it’s just different. We try to keep one day for project meetings in the office and then the rest of the time it’s flexible. We’re in constant communication and the conversation is more focused rather than random,” said Lawrence.

But how realistic is it to think we can all work from home during this troubling time, and what are the financial benefits companies can expect to gain?

“One of the financial benefits of allowing people work from home or have remote working is that if organisations are not set up for this and individuals become ill during a pandemic, ultimately the employer will lose a lot of productivity. By reducing this risk and allowing people to work from home they can look after their wellbeing, reduce stress in a crisis time and ultimately they will keep their staff well, fit and in work,” said Morgan Lobb, CEO and Founder at VERCIDA Group.

Of course, if your business isn’t set up for flexible and home working then the headlines today could make for some angst, but with technologies available at the click of a button, businesses can set up workarounds for communication difficulties pretty quickly.

“If you’re not doing it your competitors will benefit for a start... We live in a fully accessible technological world so it’s easy to do and more cost-effective than having large offices. I argue that certain roles don’t need personal collaboration on a daily basis,” said the Managing Director at VERCIDA Group.

Monday, Slack and Hubspot are all technologies to help remote workers communicate and collaborate on projects from wherever they are in the world.

But what about the workers themselves? Check out this article, Ten Tips to Increase Productivity for Remote Workers, from our friends at Onyx Media and Communications on how to achieve increased productivity when remotely working.

Needless to say, COVID-19 will not be halting VERCIDA’s activities and efforts to promote an inclusive and diverse workforce for all. We’ll be working away, potentially from home, to inform you of our client’s inclusive initiatives and celebrating those companies that make diversity a business priority.

So what advice can we give to employers in this time of uncertainty?

“My advice to employers that have not tried or considered remote working before is to let them know that one of the advantages is that it opens up the available talent pool as you are giving your targeted job seekers a wider net.

“And if you can hear kids or dogs in the background, it’s because I’m working from home!” said Morgan.
