Empowering Women Month

Category: Gender (Equality & Identity)

International Women's Day

Every March we celebrate Women in all forms. It is essentially a month where everyone raises awareness of the impact women have made on history, and highlights the issues and challenges many women face in the world today.

In several parts of the world, women are still highly discriminated against,  for instance, they may have less access to education and economic opportunities. That’s why throughout March 2022, we share and support women’s rights.

In order to promote gender equality, we are concentrating on the amazing women in our network. Women's Month is an occasion to recognise the accomplishments and advancements that women have made in the workplace. We aim to #BreakTheBias for women, in keeping with this year's theme, and appreciate female input from all women worldwide in order to level the playing field and help them advance.

On March 8th, we commemorate International Women's Day, a global event that honours women's great accomplishments, raises awareness, and inspires others to push for gender equality. The origins of this event may be traced back to the early 1900s when 15,000 women marched through New York City in the hopes of better working conditions, compensation, and voting rights. The first-ever National Women's Day was founded in 1909, and the celebration has since extended to a number of countries around the world.

Despite this, women continue to be underrepresented in business at all levels, with women of colour being the most underrepresented of all, trailing white men, men of colour, and white women. Key sectors including tech, engineering and science are still overwhelmingly male-dominated and it has been found that girls are less likely to want to go into STE(A)M careers because they know that these sectors are male-dominated. But it’s not all doom and gloom as it is getting better!

During the past few years, we’ve seen great progress in various programs across the globe to help advance females in a number of areas. Research has shown that Fortune 500 companies with the highest representation of women on boards financially outperform companies with the lowest representation of women on boards. But a report by McKinsey states that men are not only more likely to ask for promotions and salary increases, but the way they ask also means they are more likely to get them.

In order to level the playing field employees need to set in motion strategies to encourage women to ask for what they deserve but better still not make the onus be on that of the women. Structured appraisals help to make sure those who deserve promotion and pay rises have a pathway to follow so they can be recognised and acknowledged and reap the rewards they deserve. Organisations need to make an environment that makes these kinds of requests possible in a safe place and recognise the benefits women have to offer in the workplace.

Women need to be empowered to #BreakTheBias.
