UWE named one of the best young universities!

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has been named one of the best young universities in the world.

The University has this year been included in the Times Higher Education's 150 under 50 for the first time since the annual rankings were established five years ago.

UWE Bristol Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve West said, “This is wonderful and well-deserved news for the University. The result reflects the magnificent commitment by staff and students at UWE Bristol and we proudly believe that our ambitious strategic plans leading up to 2020 have made a huge inroad into securing this globally-recognised positioning.

“Our global reach includes business partnerships with institutions in Asia, US, Africa and Europe. We have an ambitions campus masterplan that will see a flagship Business and Law School open for business in 2017; significant investment in state-of-the-art simulated learning opportunities; links with hundreds of business and community partners in the West and overseas. These activities support our student experience and contribute to society through creating a workforce fit for the future needs of our society in health, business and industry.

“In addition our research is having a big impact with globally-significant projects ranging from diagnostic tests for cancer to creating electricity from urine powered microbial fuel cells to creating water purification plants that can be used in refugee camps. We are extremely proud of this latest accolade for UWE Bristol.”

UK Universities account for 25 of the 150 places with the majority being based in Europe and Asia. Placings in the top 150 are based on innovation, teaching and the learning environment, research influence, volume, income and reputation, and international outlook.

Times Higher Education rankings editor Phil Baty said, “Now in its fifth year (the rankings) were designed to celebrate the achievements of young institutions that have made a big impact on the world stage in years rather than centuries.”
