UWE Bristol win Award for advancing women's careers in STEM

A DEPARTMENT in the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol has received a bronze award in recognition of its commitment to advancing women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine.
The UWE department of Engineering Design and Mathematics has secured a bronze Athena SWAN award, and will be officially presented the award at a ceremony in which around 100 other higher education institutions, research centres and individual schools and departments will receive their awards.
The department was successful in their application of which the process included assessing how well equality of opportunity is promoted, identifying areas for improvement, describing how women will be supported at key career points, explaining how a culture of inclusivity will be promoted and deciding upon actions to address any gender imbalances.
UWE Bristol has already achieved a bronze award at institution level and awarded bronze awards for the departments of Biological, Biomedical and Analytical Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery and Allied Health Professions.
Dr Catherine Hobbs, head of the engineering, design and mathematics department said: “The department is delighted that our progress in developing good practice supporting women in engineering and maths has been recognised by Athena SWAN.
“Good practice tends to be good for everyone, while bad practice tends to impact particularly on women. By improving our practices we can achieve a better environment for all staff and students.”
The award ceremony will take place on June 15.
