UWE Bristol celebrate Black History Month

University of the West of England celebrate Black History Month 2016. 

Students and staff at UWE Bristol are joining the city-wide celebrations to mark Black History Month. A full programme of activities will start with an 'everyone welcome' celebration of Nigerian Independence at the UWE Student Union on 1 and 2 October, followed by a performance of theBreathing Fire Theatre Company performing at Bower Ashton on the 4 October. It will end with a marking of the Bristol Bus Boycott with the original Bristol double-decker bus on Frenchay campus the 27 and 28 October and 'The Politics of Black Leadership, Activism and Active Citizenship' at M Shed on 24 November.

This year 77% of UWE Bristol Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) graduates secured professional and graduate jobs significantly above the 71% national average for all graduates.

Steve Neill, Diversity Champion for BME groups and Pro Vice-Chancellor at UWE Bristol said, “We are delighted to join the city in recognising this important calendar event. We are delighted at the University that our own BME students are achieving very strong employment outcomes adding to a history of strong achievements and role models for the BME community in Bristol”.

Now in its 30th year, Black History Month is an annual nationwide initiative running throughout October that aims to unite local communities and promote knowledge of black and ethnic minority history.
