UWE Bristol held a collaborative event with Spike Island and Ujima Radio featuring the Labaina Himid exhibition and performances from top Bristol artists and UWE Bristol students in aid of their Africa Week on 23rd March.

Africa Week, which is running from the 27th – 31st March, 2017, is a programme of events which recognise the work of Africans in diverse fields in the UK. It brings together different themes which challenge, explore and celebrate the heritage, diversity and progress made by Africa and Africans and the University and beyond. At UWE Bristol, the Africa Week, which is run by a team of staff and students, first took place in 2016 and received plaudits for its brilliance and wide engagement. Africa Week 2017 has been no different with a wide range of events taking place.

Spike Island’s Exhibition was a collaboration with Modern Art Oxford and Nottingham Contemporary and focuses on migration, labour and creativity – which have been longstanding concerns for Lubaina Himid.

Lubaina Humid was a pioneer of the Black Arts Movement in Britain in the 1980s, which offered a forum for black artists exploring the social and political issues surrounding black history and identity.

Anchored by Naming the Money (2004), a spectacular installment of 100 life-size, painted figures that had been shown only once before in its entirety, the exhibition brought into dialogue major works from the past 20 years, honing in on Himid’s theatrical use of cut-outs, colour and pattern.

Africa Week will conclude with a Celebration and Showcase event on Friday 31st March. It will be an evening of flair, flamboyance and fun featuring cultural and creative performances, a fashion show, food and music, plus an awards ceremony. UWE Bristol is encouraging staff and students to nominate any individuals that they feel meet the criteria providing a reason for why they have chosen to nominate that person.
