UK power networks tackle food poverty

Families struggling to buy basic groceries in Hastings will have a new van coming to their aid.

UK Power Networks has donated a delivery vehicle to Dom’s Food Mission, a charity founded by the electricity company’s employee Dominic Warren to help bring relief to local people who are going hungry.

The engineer spends much of his spare time collecting surplus, unsold food from local supermarkets to distribute locally to families living in food poverty. His work has won celebrity support from Peter Andre, actor John Challis who played ‘Boycie’ in Only Fools and Horses and George Gilbey from Gogglebox.

Dominic said: “I am really grateful to my employer UK Power Networks for donating the van. It will be so useful to visit the supermarkets in one hit to transport the food, rather than putting the seats down in our cars. Sometimes we collect enough food to feed 100 people.

“I believe in the work we are doing because there are families that can’t buy basic things and that’s terrible. It is an incredible feeling to help others, far better than any reward. I have a brilliant team working behind me and my wife Alex has been tremendous.

“I have a young son and daughter which makes me think about people like me who cannot afford to feed their families. It could be anyone that needs our help from a businessman, who once had everything and slowly loses it all, to a company director or dentist.”

Patrick Clarke, director of network operations at UK Power Networks, said: “Dominic is a force of nature who is incredibly committed to helping struggling families in his community. We are delighted to support his work by providing a delivery van to the charity.”

Each Tuesday and Sunday Dom’s Food Mission provides tea, coffee and meals in a subway where they feed up to 25 homeless people with food that would have been thrown away. Dominic’s next plan is to create food parcels for war veterans using supermarket donations.
