Employees at UK Power Networks have chosen four charities to be the company’s charities of the year.
Eighteen good causes were put forward by staff at the power firm, which owns and operates power lines across the South East, London and East of England, with the Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support and Help for Heroes receiving the most votes.
Fundraising days will be held throughout the year for the four charities, starting with the Alzheimer’s Society on May 18.
Last year staff raised more than £63,000 for charity through events such as bake sales, dress down days, endurance challenges and fun runs.
Carolyn Nixon, head of communications and engagement, said:
“The work we do in the community is really important to us – and the fundraising we do as an organisation is an important part of this work.
“Last year UK Power Networks raised more than £63,000 for 18 different charities ranging from The Little Smugglers Care Home to Children in Need and Action for Children. This year we are determined to raise even more for worthy causes but will be looking to focus on the four main charities chosen by our staff.”
UK Power Networks also runs a Team Sport Award scheme to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities. Last year £13,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
The company gives all its employees two days paid leave each year to volunteer or fundraise in the community. Last year employees spent nearly 5,000 volunteering hours working with local charities and conservation groups, making 2015 the company’s biggest ever year of volunteering.
