Thirteen graduates have clinched top jobs in the electricity industry with UK Power Networks.
Ten will specialise in electrical engineering and three in business, including surveying. They beat tough competition from hundreds of applicants to gain places on the programme.
Three undergraduate students will join them having secured a year’s paid work with the company on projects relevant to their degrees as part of the Powering Placements scheme.
UK Power Networks delivers electricity across more than a quarter of Great Britain, employing 5,600 staff and serving 8.1million homes and businesses. The new graduates will be based at major offices in London, Crawley and Bury St Edmunds.
Over the next two years the graduates will receive technical training, work placements, leadership development and support from directors, mentors and buddies. The graduates, who come from a diverse range of backgrounds, also run events for their own alumni of graduates and undergraduates in the first four years with the company.
Chris Degg, Director of Human Resources at UK Power Networks, said: “Graduates fill key roles as future leaders and technical experts in our business at a time of rapid change. We are constructing a pipeline of talented individuals, which includes graduates, apprentices, external recruits from the market place as well as developing our own staff with the skills needed to ensure that we continue to supply reliable electricity to millions of homes and businesses.
“The Powering Placement students join us for a year in industry between their second or third year of university. They gain relevant experience and knowledge and if they do well and enjoy their time with us, they have the opportunity to be fast-tracked onto our graduate training programme when they complete their degrees.”
With 43% of its technical workforce aged over 50 UK Power Networks needs graduates with specialist engineering and business skills to fill essential roles in the electricity distribution industry. Nearly 30 candidates chase every position so the selection process is rigorous and involves aptitude tests, video interviews, an assessment centre and face-to-face interview.
Two graduate training schemes were available this year:
- Engineering – technical courses and on-the-job training in power engineering are combined with behavioural and leadership training. Graduates work towards chartership with the Institute of Engineering and Technology
- Business – the same access to workshops, courses and flexible placements, but graduates can work towards professional qualifications or accreditation with other institutions, such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
