What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History month is a time specially dedicated to the achievements and contributions of black people to the world and communities over the years.
What black individual do you most admire in history?
Although there are many black individuals that I admire, my focus would have to be on Doreen Lawrence. A British Jamaican campaigner and the mother of Stephen Lawrence, a black British teenager who was murdered in a racist attach in South East London in 1993. She promoted reforms of the police service and her services to community relations has not gone unnoticed. In July 2012 she took part in the opening ceremony of the Olympic, In 2013 She was elevated to the peerage of Baroness and is formerly styled Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, of Clarendon in the Commonwealth realm of Jamaica. In 2014 she was named as British most influential women in the BBBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour Power List. She sits on the Labour benches in the House of Lords as a working peer. With all her achievements she will be remembered as a mother who fought for justice.
What is a fact about you most people would not know?
I am from the same Parish in Jamaica as Doreen Lawrence.
