Top 10 reasons why you should work with the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

Category: Top 10

Formed in 2016 with the merger of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the BEIS, or the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy now develops some of the government’s most important policies. It is therefore no great surprise that they would place a high premium on recruiting talented staff, as reflected in the number of benefits they offer.

1. Pensions

The Civil Service Pension Scheme is currently one of the most generous pension plans on the market. Personal contributions increase with wage rises, and the government commits to matching employee’s contribution up to 20% of base salary.

2. Learning and development

The BEIS recognises how important opportunities for advancement are to its employees, and so sets aside a portion of its operating budget to dedicate to funding new training opportunities, such as the Future Leaders Scheme and the Positive Action Pathway.

3. Adjusted working

Employees often encounter difficulties in their lives which can impact their ability to work. Whether this takes the form of disabilities or long-term health conditions, they are willing to provide whatever adjustments are needed to suit their requirements, either by providing specialist equipment, making physical changes to the workplace, or allowing more time for the completion of tasks.

4. Family support

The Parental Support Network allows employees with families, or those wishing to start a family, with a mechanism that allows them to better manage their joint responsibilities, as well as providing a place where they can discuss potential issues relating to their situation.

5. Ethnic and religious support

FAME, or the Faith And Minority Ethnic network was set up in order to prevent workplace discrimination based on race or religion and promote ethnic diversity, achieving this with a variety of activities including seminars, events and monthly Capability Building sessions.

6. Volunteering

To ensure their employees can have well-rounded lives, the BEIS promotes volunteerism, giving those who work for it an optional three days a year to be allocated to voluntary and charitable pursuits outside of work.

7. LGBTQ+ support

The BEIS promotes a safe environment for its LGBTQ+ employees with its LGBTQ+ Network, a system of support where issues can be discussed openly or in confidence, which promotes the inclusion of LGBTQ+ staff, and develops methods of welfare support for them.

8. Mental health

With the government’s ongoing push to emphasise the importance of addressing mental health, the BEIS Mental Health Network aims to support those employees or their family members who might be experiencing difficulty.

9. Perks and bonuses

Among the miscellaneous benefits that come with working for the BEIS are access to a staff gym and restaurant, season ticket loans and participation in the Cycle to Work scheme.

10. Internships and experience

For those looking to gain some valuable work place experience during University, or for graduates looking to get their foot in the jobs market, the BEIS offers a number of different internships and graduate programmes which can help candidates achieve these stated goals.
