Top 10 reasons why should work with the Home Office

Category: Top 10, Home Office

The Home Office mission is fundamentally important - to protect the UK by keeping citizens safe and our borders secure.

The Home Office leads on immigration and passports, drugs and crime policy, counter-extremism and counter-terrorism. But it's also committed to becoming one of the most diverse workplaces in the UK. Does this sound like something you'd like to be a part of? Here are ten reasons why the Home Office is a great place to work. And when you're ready for your next great job, check out available roles in the VERCIDA database.

  • Award-winning in diversity and inclusion

In recent years the Home Office has won the Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion and Business in the Community Race Equality Awards. They've also been commended by Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index, and were listed in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women.

  • Break the Mental Health Stigma

Break the Stigma is the Home Office mental health support group. It's a powerful national Home Office community and a fundamental element in the Home Office Inclusive by Instinct Strategy. Its goals are to support staff with mental health issues, promote wellbeing and combat stigma around mental health.

  • Gender equality network

This volunteer-led support network delivers projects to promote gender equality objectives. GEN helps identify gender inequality and ensures that issues are raised, action promoted, and support given those being directly impacted. GEN also works closely with the other staff support networks to provide specific learning, training and support opportunities to staff.

  • LGBT+ support

Spectrum is the LGBT+ network in the Home Office. It works to provide a safe working environment, where all staff are able to be everything they can be.  It supports LGBT+ leaders, builds inclusive policies, and marks cultural celebrations like Pride.

  • Faith networks

The Home Office features informal networks for a variety of faiths. These include Home Office Christians, Home Office Islamic Network, The Hindu Connection, and Home Office Sikh Association.

  • Guaranteed interview for disabled applicants

The Home Office is an accredited user of the government’s “two ticks” disability symbol, which denotes organisations which have a positive attitude towards disabled applicants.  Applicants who meet the minimum criteria in the job specification are guaranteed an interview.  Selection will be on merit.

  • BAME support

The NETWORK promotes Race Equality within the Home Office.  It works closely with senior management to ensure staff from all backgrounds have a voice. It ensures new and existing policies meet the needs of staff from BAME communities.

  • Working through cancer

The volunteer managed WTC network provides much needed support, empathy and practical advice for colleagues diagnosed with cancer, people who are carers and for line managers.  It offers a resource page on the Home Office intranet, support for line managers, and buddy groups.

  • Disability support

Alongside structural supports, the Home Office offers a support network called Home Office Disability Support. It provides peer support and helps advance disability friendly policies.

  • Support for voluntary diversity networks

The Group Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team provides administrative support to all the Home Office diversity networks. It also offers advice to employees who want to start a new voluntary network.
