Top 10 Gender Diversity Employers 2017

Here at VERCIDA we recently conducted research to find out how our clients are tackling gender diversity and equality in the workplace.  Who is going the extra mile to ensure equality, opportunity and fair treatment for all, irrespective of gender. Here is our top 10 Gender Diversity Employers of 2017. 

10. Lendlease

Lendlease feel the greatest contributors to their success are the people that work for them. This is why they offer women and men the same opportunities to succeed. 

Developing a truly diverse and inclusive team is more than just adhering to the law to do the bare minimum for Lendlease. They've pledged each year to disclose the proportion of women in senior executive roles, as well as the number of female members of the Lendlease Board.

 9. Mitie

Through Mitie's Engender network they are working hard to create equality for both men and women. From reviewing their gender ratio to anonymising names on applications and CV's. Mitie are ensuring their organisation do not contain bias toward one gender or the other.

Mitie also offer a parenting initiative for both their male and female staff.

 8. BAE Systems

BAE Systems has made no secret of the industries historical gender gap, a gap they wish to close. They hold high hopes of increasing the number of women in senior executive positions. 

Their training initiatives are aimed at preventing unconscious bias and making BAE Systems a more inclusive place to work. 

BAE Systems also works in partnership with Opportunity Now, a campaign on gender diversity from Business in the Community.

 7. Royal Mail

Women represent 16% of Royal Mail's workforce. They clearly are determined to close the gap with focus on women in frontline roles with 20% of their managers being women.

Royal Mail also have a Women's Network set up to support the development of their female staff. As well as this Royal Mail offer a parenting initiative for both their male and female staff. 

With partnerships in hand, such as WISE, Royal Mail have a good support system in place for female employees.

 6. HS2

HS2 use events such as ‘get on board, an event that was hosted by HS2s’ equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) team to recognise International Women’s Day. Women make up a mere 9% in the engineering and technology work force, something HS2 is aiming to change.

HS2’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team looks to recruit a mix of people, from experienced individuals and graduates, to fresh talent and those seeking a change in career.

HS2 are proud of their aspiration to build an organisation which celebrates diversity and that demonstrates an inclusive approach in the workplace, recognising that diverse teams are more effective and resilient, helping them better serve the communities with which they engage.

HS2 works in partnership with WISE, they are a great place for women to pursue a rewarding career. WISE is an organisation that enables and energises people in business, industry and education to increase the participation, contribution and success of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). HS2 was also accredited the Business in the Community Workplace Gender Equality Award.

 5. Atkins

Atkins has been working hard to break down barriers for women in the engineering industry. They believe that being fair, equal and helping each other is vital to improve and advance is vital to attracting and keeping talent.

Atkins gender balance in the senior management population has seen a steady rise in the past few years and with initiatives like their ‘Women's Professional Network’ in place they hope this will continue.

Atkins works in partnership with WISE, and together they help make Atkins a great place for women to pursue a rewarding career. WISE is an organisation that enables and energises people in business, industry and education to increase the participation, contribution and success of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In 2017, Atkins was accredited the Business in the Community Workplace Gender Equality Award.

 4. Sky

At Sky it is believed that having a gender balanced leadership team makes them a better business. Today a third of their senior leaders are women and Sky hope to raise it to more than half. To ensure they meet this target they are taking steps to level the playing field, supercharging the great women already working for them through their Women in Leadership Sponsorship and Development programme and attracting the best talent to work for Sky through targeted marketing.

Sky have 3 awards, for their women’s initiatives, Business in the Community Workplace Gender Equality award, The Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2016 award and the WISE Award.

 3.PwC

PwC is committed to helping achieve gender equality, not only in the workplace but also in the industry and wider society. PwC offers a women’s networking circle such as Women Upfront. Women Upfront is an online career resource for PwC women that offers videos, articles, resources and other interactive features exploring topics relevant to working women and professional advancement.

In 2016 PwC was accredited The Times Top 50 Employers for Women award and also work in partnership with Wellbeing of Women. Wellbeing of Women is the charity dedicated to improving the health of women and babies across the UK.

 2. BBC

In 2016 the BBC launched their Diversity and Inclusion Strategy setting out a target of 50% equal gender balance by 2020 for workforce and across content. Nearly half of the workforce is already female (48.2%) and more than 40 per cent of those in leadership positions are women (42.2%) – a figure which has been going up in recent years. The BBC’s audited gender pay gap is 9.3 percent against a national average of 18.1. The BBC has pledged to close the gender pay gap by 2020.

The BBC has several employee networks specifically aimed at women, these include; pan-organisation, global news, finance and business and WiSTEM. Each of these is sponsored by an executive team member and influence policy, practices and opportunities that support the career development of women.

The BBC has introduced a number of development programmes and mentoring schemes for women in junior and middle grades to support them in achieving their full potential. These include: The Hilda Matheson Women into Leadership Programme, Women in News Leadership Programme, Women in Technical Production Programme, Global Women in News Mentoring Scheme, Sandy Chalmers Women in Radio Mentoring Scheme and the Caroline Ahern Bursary scheme for female comedy writers/performers. The BBC has also created a job share database to encourage more job shares and flexible working.

 1. Morgan Stanley

Supporting the progression of women into senior roles is a key strategic priority for Morgan Stanley’s senior leadership teams worldwide. The correlation between gender-balanced teams and improved decision-making, innovation and performance align with their core values of leading with exceptional ideas, putting clients first, and doing the right thing.

Morgan Stanley’s initiatives focus on Ongoing Female Recruiting, Retention & Development, Providing Additional Support, and gender diversity targets.

As well as all of the above Morgan Stanley also has the Women's Business Alliance. This is a strategic, business driven initiative to integrate, encourage and promote career development for women. 

Morgan Stanley was awarded Times Top 50 employers for Women 2 years in a row for both 2016 and 2017.
