Top 10 Black, Asian & Minority Ethnicity (BAME) Employers 2017

Here at VERCIDA we recently conducted research to find out how our clients are tackling ethnic equality in the workplace, who is going the extra mile to ensure equality, opportunity and fair treatment for all, irrespective of ethnicity. Here is our top 10 black, asian & minority ethnicity (BAME) employers of 2017:

10. London South Bank University (LSBU)  

London South Bank University have a range of staff network groups. Their networks are a social and advocacy network for LSBU staff with an interesting equality and diversity issues. Equinet is the equality network for black and minority ethnic staff at LSBU. This network aims to create a safe, inclusive and diverse place to work.

LSBU’s Equinet hosted an event for Black History Month in 2017 that inspired and empowered through the mediums of poetry, talks from activists, writers, musicians and entrepreneurs.

9. Lloyd's 

Lloyds work in partnership with Race for Opportunity, which is committed to improving employment opportunities for ethnic minorities across the UK.

The insurance company has various initiatives in place to support employees from different ethnic backgrounds. These include BAME staff networks, development programmes, leadership programmes and more.

8. Sainsbury's

With ambitions to be the most inclusive retailer, Sainsbury’s were proud to announce two of their staff featured in the Financial Times Top 100 Ethnic Minority Leader List in 2017. They also were named as one of the UK’s Best Employers for Race by Business in the Community.

Sainsbury’s BAME initiatives have helped to increase representation of their BAME staff. The retailer offers mentoring circles to share knowledge and experience as part of a group.

7. HarperCollins

HarperCollins was among the many organisations that made 2017’s Best Employer for Race List by Business in the Community. With BAME traineeship programmes on offer to their ethnic community its not hard to see why they made our top 10. The programme was launched with the support of Business in the Community’s race campaign, with whom HarperCollins is in partnership with.

 6. Royal Mail

Royal Mail has a diverse workforce in terms of race and ethnicity, reflecting the communities in which their people live and work. Royals Mail’s Thrive Campaign promotes awareness regarding the diverse mix of individuals that the organisation has and also commemorates the success of their colleagues coming from varied backgrounds.

Royal Mail also work in close partnership with Business in the Community and Race for Opportunity.

5. Ofcom

Sharon White, CEO at Ofcom, is the organisations first black woman to sit at the top seat and the first to have such a senior role in any UK media organisation.

Ofcom offer initiatives that are open to all their staff with Ofcom Race Network mainly aimed at those from black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds. They hold regular events with internal and external speakers who share their experiences to raise awareness and understanding of issues around ethnicity, diversity and cultural awareness.

4. Thames Valley Police

SAME (Support Association for Minority Ethnic staff) is one of several staff support networks at Thames Valley Police for their BAME community. One of thier initiatives is to host a annual BAME development day.

VERCIDA recently published an article that told of Superintendant Bhupinder Rai and her journey as an Asian women working her way up the police force. Thames Valley Police are striving to meet the needs of its BAME staff and continue attracting and retaining talent from the BAME community.

3. BBC

In 2016 the BBC launched their Diversity and Inclusion Strategy setting out a target of 15% for black, Asian and minority-ethnic (BAME) by 2020 across workforce, on screen and on-air. Currently BBC BAME staff represent 14.5% of the overall workforce and 10.3% of leadership teams.

The BBC Black and Asian Forum (BBAF) is an employee network led by staff providing peer support, networking opportunities and a focus for discussion of BAME related issues. Now in its third year, the BBC Clore Leadership Programme is a 12-month programme aimed to increase representation of BAME employees in the leadership of arts, culture and broadcast industry. Run in conjunction with BBAF, RISE (Real Inspiration for Staff at Every level) is a mentoring programme to inspire and develop the talent of Black and Minority Ethnic staff in junior to middle grades.

The BBC has partnered with Creative Access for a second year with 25 trainees (all graduates from BAME backgrounds) for a 12-month supported traineeship with on and off-the-job training and development in production. The BBC has partnered with the London-based Mama Youth Project for four years, offering BBC Academy training and month-long placements to young people – who join the BBC after a 13-week training programme at Sky.

2. Bloomberg 

Bloomberg drives disruptive innovation by embracing and leveraging diversity in all its forms. They strive to create a culture that values difference, fosters inclusion and promotes collaboration to drive business results.

Bloomberg communities are an important part of the global diversity and inclusion strategy. Bloomberg supports eight communities of which over 5,000 employees across global regions are members and participate in activities related to commercial impact, leadership development, marketing, recruiting, and community engagement. The Black Professionals and Pan Asian Communities at Bloomberg foster and support the development of BAME employees, promoting a collaborative and inclusive environment to share ideas as well as increase professional and leadership development.

Bloomberg previously received the Black British Business Award for it's contributions of exceptional black professionals in 2016. They are proud to partner with several organisations including BBBA and Race for Opportunity to drive inclusion in the workplace.

1. CA Technologies

Making number one of VERCIDA’s top 10 is CA Technologies.

CA Technologies offers its BAME employees a wide range of initiatives that include BAME staff networks, leadership programmes, mentoring schemes and more.

Working in partnership with Business in the Community and Race for Opportunity led to accreditations from both organisations.
