Tapiwa Mabaya, Team Leader in Sheffield’s Healthcare Department
Where are you from?
I was born in Zimbabwe where I grew up with both my parents until I was 2 years old when I moved to London with my mother. I have visited my family in Zimbabwe over the years where my dad still lives happily as retired accountant. When I visit my dad and his mother of 92 who still lives in the rural areas, she takes me to the grave site of my family and talks of our ancestors being Zulu. After spending all my School yeas in Sheffield where my mother’s grandfather was an engineer working at the Hardy Pick steelworks (which is now a boozer) I very much consider myself a solid Yorkshireman and proud African.
Any success stories?
I have managed my own businesses since leaving School and prior to joining Aviva in 2014 I was running my own coffee shop. When I joined Aviva I wanted to test myself in a recognised business and spend more quality time with my then growing family. Since 2014 I have moved through the pay levels in the PMI claims department as a claims consultant before securing a permanent team leader role in 2018. I was proud to be nominated for an Ace Award at the start of the year and go on to win a runners up prize in the charmed customer category in this year.
What does Black History Month Mean to You?
For me it’s about realising we are all here because someone suffered through something or sacrificed something or made a difficult choice in our past to pave the way for what we do today. That’s about celebrating history. It’s about being conscious of what has gone before and learning from it. I hope all cultures and backgrounds can join in recognising black history for a month and that hopefully it will bring people closer together in a shared understanding.
How would you encourage those in the office to get involved in BHM?
Share stories about wonderful black characters and people of interest from history and present day who’s story may not have been heard by many people. Give your colleagues the chance to learn about events and people who they may not have otherwise known about.
