The business case behind CA's diversity and inclusion programmes

Category: Employer Focus

CA Technologies recognizes that by supporting and embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace it can receive benefits for both its employees and the business.

They have been extensively recognized for their efforts surrounding diversity and inclusion:

  • CA was selected by Forbes magazine as one of “America’s Best Employers” for 2017.
  • Fatherly named CA one of the 50 Best Places to Work for New Dads.
  • Working Mother named CA one of the 2017 Best Companies for Multicultural Women.
  • CA scored highest rank in Human Rights Campaign’s 2017 Corporate Equality Index.
  • CA was named as the World’s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute.

This highlights the great work that CA is doing as a brand and it has allowed them to benchmark against other companies in order to continue to improve. CA aims to encourage its employees to unleash their full potential and strengths by providing them with an environment where they are comfortable to show their uniqueness and know that this will be valued by CA. This is highlighted through the CA recruitment campaign, #bringwhatyoubring.

CA operates in a fast-paced high-tech industry and believes that in order to innovate and stay competitive they must have employees who are able to think out-of-the-box. The #bringwhatyoubring campaign encourages individuals who are thinking about applying to work with CA to bring their uniqueness, including new ideas and different ways of thinking. CA is committed to creating a culture that supports its employees in embracing their personality.

CA believes that people should not have to pretend to be someone that they aren’t within the workplace and that they should instead be able to celebrate their personality and the skills that they have, as this benefits themselves and it allows CA to be successful

How CA encompasses diversity

CA recognizes that all of its employees have different priorities and these are taken into account in its benefits and people-focused programmes. For example, CA offers adoption, paternity and maternity leave as well as a range of other benefits. Companies are legally required to give employees 12 weeks off when they have a child or need to be with a sick family member, however they are not legally required to offer employees pay.

CA goes above and beyond the legal requirements by providing employees with up to 12 weeks’ pay for qualified family medial leaves. This is available for mothers, fathers, adoptive parents and employees who have sick family members. They also offer a short-term disability benefit for new mothers, on top of the paid family medical leave that they can receive.

CA has a perfect score on the Corporate Equality Index, meaning that they are considered as one of the best companies to work for LGBT employees. This is due to a number of factors, including a health plan that has included coverage for transgender surgery for several years. CA was also one of the first companies to cover same sex domestic partners in their health insurance scheme. CA’s Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and harassment policies also include both sexual orientation and gender identity.

In terms of recruiting, CA works to ensure that all candidates receive equal opportunities and they avoid putting similar types of people together, as CA realizes the opportunities that are created from encouraging people to speak about their different ideas and perspectives.

CA’s diverse candidate slate and interview practices focus on reducing bias in the recruitment process and managing against individual unconscious bias. In addition to this, diverse interview panels ensure that diversity is represented amongst interviewers, therefore reducing the chance of individual unconscious bias. CA has also stopped asking candidates what they are currently earning, as they think that they should be paying people for the job that they are doing, regardless of what they are currently earning.

In 2016, 13% of CA’s senior management hires were multicultural women. In the last two years, they have increased the representation of women in technical roles by 14%. These figures highlight the positive results that CA is seeing from implementing diversity and inclusion programmes. CA knows that there’s still a lot of work to be done, but they’re on the right track.

CA creates a culture for innovation

CA aims to create a workplace culture that enables employees to feel supported and therefore able to reach their full potential. CA has done a lot of work to socialise the company’s mission to help align all of its’ people around their impact on customers, regardless of their role.

In CA’s annual employee opinion survey, they saw an increase in the percentage of employees who feel that they understand the CA mission and DNA and how their job contributes to CA achieving its strategy. This shows that CA is moving in the right direction for success.

CA continues to place a focus on its diversity and inclusion strategies in order to create a better workplace for its employees. They believe that this is the right thing to do for employees, customers and business. They support their employees, therefore allowing them to work to the best of their ability and reach their full potential. CA believes that this is the only way that they can achieve their mission of eliminating the barriers between ideas and outcomes.
