Teneo UK celebrate International Women's Day

International Women’s Day has been held on March 8th since 1911, to celebrate the achievements of women across the globe and to highlight continued gender inequality. To support this goal, a theme is chosen each year, providing a focus for discussion, events and activism. This year, the theme is #BreakTheBias.

Bias refers to an unfair prejudice or inclination either towards or against a person or group. It is based on preconceived ideas. Gender bias makes it difficult for women to move forward in their careers, be safe in both public and private spaces, and live authentically as themselves. This is compounded by other factors such as sexuality, ethnicity, age, disability and gender conformity, as women can also face bias against their other identities. You can learn more about this intersectionality, and how it impacts women’s experiences in the workplace, in this report released by McKinsey on International Women’s Day last year.

Bias can be either deliberate or unconscious, but both are just as impactful and we all have a responsibility to check our own biases and speak out against other people’s.

On Tuesday 8th March 2022 ,Teneo's Gender ERG hosted their first panel discussion to celebrate International Women's Day, a hybrid event hosted in our London office but streamed nationally. Attendees heard from senior leaders in various parts of our business about what #BreakTheBias means to them.

"Diversity doesn't just happen during recruitment rounds, but by promoting and retaining diverse talent."

"#BreakTheBias isn't a one-off initiative. It requires cultural change across the board.  We all need to listen and understand women's experiences in the workplace so that we can help drive change."

Gavin Park, white maleGavin Park, SMD, Financial Advisory

"Our clients increasingly expect diverse teams, but working in an inclusive environment also makes the job more enjoyable for everyone. For me, #BreakTheBias is about role modelling inclusion at every chance I get."

TIm Nixon white maleTim Nixon, Head of UK Consulting

"We need to break down the barriers that stop women progressing in the workplace, to increase the representation at the top of the business. This means that we as a company, and as colleagues, need to provide the tools and support to ensure a level playing field."

Mital Suchak Asian femaleMital Suchak, Director of People

The panel discussion and live Q&A provided a platform for all colleagues to come together and learn from our leaders about how they are driving inclusion across Teneo.

Tips on helping to #BreakTheBias from our panellists:

  1. Call out disempowering behaviour where you see it, be that a woman's contribution being ignored in a meeting or inappropriate conversations in men-only settings. Using humour can help to diffuse the tension in these moments
  2. Proactively start conversations about inclusive topics, such as how team members want to balance their lives around family or other commitments. We need to normalise supporting both men and women in achieving this balance
  3. Listen to and learn from the experiences of others. To take Gavin's example, unless you know that someone on your team notices she is the only woman on the pitch deck and assumes that she is only there due to her gender, you won't be able to provide support and #BreakTheBias
  4. Look out for your own biases, and work to challenge them. Do you assume that a woman is less trustworthy than a man? Do you view a man helping his child while on a work call as a 'superhero', but a woman in the same position as just a regular working mum? We've all got biases, but we can all work to make sure our actions aren't driven by them

Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. Together, we can all #breakthebias - on International Women's Day and beyond.
