Blogpost by Jenny Yerworth on Technology - The bygone years but not forgotten.
Over the past few months I have been writing about modern technology and how some of us have difficulty in grasping how to use it, particularly smartphones.
There was a time when technology was highly secret and that was during the war. The technology I'm talking about is the Enigma machine. This was highly classified and those who operated it were sworn to secrecy. They were not even allowed to give any indication as to where they worked.
It was essential that it was manned all the time, as there were codes to be encrypted, this resulted with us winning the war.
I was thinking how easy it is to forget about technology then, as we have so much of our own new technology today.
The people who played a vital role, were women, of which there were two thirds who were operators, this was at the peak of the war. This required great skill.
This is a technology where I'm sure we can't imagine using and also the fact that it was shrouded in secrecy. This must affected the people, mentally who were using it for all those years, as they were not able to talk about their day at work. Whereas as today we are able to talk about the technology we use at work.
It was vital that they could use the Enigma machine properly and be confident in it's role in the war.
Today's technology is important in our lives today and it is a case of having to get use to it as it is here to stay, old models of computers, smartphones etc die out and new ones appear, we eventually embrace change and accept that we have to start again. It must have been so different for those who worked at Bletchley Park.
