Blog by Jenny Yerworth on 'Technology and the over 55's'
I was talking to a relative at the weekend about what I had been doing over the past year, writing blogs, particularly about those of technology and individuals over 55.
I duly sent some of them to him and he had agreed with what I had said. He also came back with some useful points.
The fact that we are 55 plus should not be a disadvantage, we have the interpersonal skills, while those who are younger have not fully developed them, as technology has taken over their lives.
The fact that we have many years experience in the workplace, makes us as he said, “more rounded”in dealing with individuals and situations at work, that only real experience can bring.
While people may feel discriminated by their age and lack of knowledge of technology, it may be helpful for those who are older and younger to get alongside and help with both the technology and the interpersonal side. By doing this it would develop equal opportunities for employment.
While there are courses run by the government some people find them intimidating and a one to one would possibly work better, and it wouldn’t be one sided, as each person would be learning a new skill.
