Surrey Police is the first emergency service organisation in the UK to sign up to gender equality movement, HeForShe.

The movement was launched in September 2014 by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson. The movement was created to provide a global platform where everyone can engage and become supporters for gender equality, with the main focus on encouraging men and boys to show their support for women.

HeForShe invites people from around the world, of all genders, to come together as equal partners to craft a shared vision of a gender equal world and implement specific, locally relevant solutions for the good of all of humanity.

HeForShe wants every voice to be heard in classrooms and corner offices around the world. Everyone has a say. Everyone has a role. Every unique contribution is essential to achieving gender equality.

Surrey Police posted the following on Facebook to announce their support of the campaign:

“We are proud this week to announce that on Wednesday 8 March we, along with Sussex Police, will become one the first emergency service organisations in the UK to sign up to the HeForShe movement.

“The movement is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of women initiated by UN Women. It aims to engage men and boys as agents of change by encouraging them to take action against negative inequalities faced by women and girls.

This is an important step for Surrey Police in their commitment to creating a diverse police service, which reflects the community they serve.
