Driving Examiner Stuart Deal tells us about his secondment recently at Department for Transport (DfT), which gave him the opportunity to see the work of ministers and Private Office first-hand.
I was recently invited to DfT offices in London as part of the recent Through the Keyhole initiative.
On arrival I was introduced to the Ministers’ Private Office and invited to attend the DfT management board meeting chaired by Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Transport, which was attended by all ministers responsible for all areas of the business.
I then joined a briefing with Lord Ahmed and his team who were preparing for a meeting in respect of an upcoming trade deal.
For the remainder of the first day I accompanied John Hayes, Minister of State, during his sessions at the House of Commons, which included a meeting with women in transport, matters concerning a bypass and further dealings in respect of maritime trade, post Brexit.
During the second day I accompanied Paul Maynard, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, and his team, attending a pre brief and subsequent meeting with the Chief Executive of Community Rail.
I also attended a brief with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) concerning a bill due to be read to the House the following day.
I met the Secretary for the special political advisors, gaining an insight into their influence in ensuring a minister’s message is accurately reported in the media.
This shadowing experience has helped me gain an insight into how hard the ministerial teams work and their ability to react in a constantly changing environment.
As a driving examiner it’s easy to feel detached from the decision makers, but this experience has helped to bridge this gap.
