Yesterday was International Women’s Day, and I’m proud to celebrate the important role women play in our business. Women are the world’s most powerful consumers, responsible for 70-80% of all purchases, and control $20 trillion in annual consumer spending. 

Unfortunately, there is still significant gender bias working against gender equality. 73% of women report microaggressions in the workplace such as being spoken over, having their competence questioned, or having others take credit for their ideas. Women are also asked to prove themselves more than men to be given credit for their performance. And the experience of all women is not the same, as female members of the LGBTQ+ community, women with disabilities, and women of color report these microaggressions in even higher numbers.

We’re proud that our focus on empowering women business leaders starts in our cocoa fields via Cocoa Life, and extends through our supply chain and C-suite. However, at MDLZ, diversity is about more than gender. It’s about inclusion, respect and appreciation of different cultures, experiences and ideas. And we’re taking a stand on this important issue with three clear D&I goals: closing our senior level gap of women in leadership, offering an inclusive bias-free workplace, and building an active and purposeful diversity and inclusion community. While we have more to do, International Women’s Day is a perfect time to showcase how we’re forging an equal world.

We have a lot to be proud of as our gender balance is a strength through much of the organization. 25% of our independent directors are women, exceeding the S&P 500 average, and over 40% of our management positions globally are filled by women (managers and directors), outperforming industry benchmarks. We’ve pivoted over the last year from a focus on demographics to building the right inclusive leadership behaviors to harness our diversity of thought and holding our people accountable for creating a culture that values difference.

We’re also committed to ensuring equal pay for equal work. For the last two years, we have been regularly reviewing our pay equity for gender globally, and our gap is consistently below the external standard of 1% and declining each year due to deliberate actions. We will continue to take aggressive steps to eliminate the gap entirely in the near term.
