Meet Karl Rutlidge

Karl has worked at Santander for just over four years and is based in our Triton Square head office in London. Karl is transsexual.

“Like a lot of transsexuals, I realised something wasn’t right when I was very young” Karl tell us. “I couldn’t fathom why I was expected to dress and act like a girl when I knew I was male. It was extremely distressing, as I didn’t have the language to express what I was feeling.”

Coming to terms with his gender identity has proven a very painful, but incredibly healing, experience for Karl.

“Transitioning isn’t a quick process, and I’ve been through multiple psychological assessments to be allowed to begin treatment. My voice has recently broken and my appearance has changed significantly, which feels so much better. I’m looking forward to my chest surgery, and moving forward with my life with a body that finally feels right!

Giving Karl the support he needs

“I’ve had fantastic support at work. My boss really looked out for me, and kept me just about on the rails when I was falling apart!” says Karl. When Karl was ready, Michelle – Karl’s boss told the wider department what was happening.

“I’d been really scared beforehand, because I’d heard all the horror stories of people being hounded out of jobs. However, everyone has been great, and I’ve been able to just be me at work without any worry.”

Karl is one of our LGB&T champions

“Being part of the LGB&T network is important to me because having received such amazing support myself, I really want to give something back” says Karl. “My advice is to be true to yourself,” Karl says

“It’s amazing how much energy it drains when you’re repressing who you are.” And we couldn’t agree more, that’s why we have a zero tolerance to discrimination of any kind.
