Salaries in the security services

The security services operate all around us in every type of organisation and sector. So, whether you are interested in protecting people, implementing systems, driving innovation or spotting cyber weak spots, it just might pay to find a job role in the security sector.

Key types of security roles and their pay

Jobs in the security services require different levels of education and training. Pay rates reflect this, ranging from £13,000-£16,000 for entry-level security officer roles to over £100,000 for top consultancy positions in cyber security.

  • Security officer

There are no specific entry requirements for most security officer jobs, although it often helps to have a good general level of education and experience in the emergency or armed services.

Salary range: from £13,000 to £16,000 at entry level to £26,000 for supervisor roles.

  • Facilities manager

Facilities managers are often qualified to HND, foundation degree or degree level in facilities management or a related subject like management, business studies or engineering. Between 3 and 10 years’ experience is usually required for this management role.

Salary range: £22,297 to £45,096 depending on level of experience, size of company and area of expertise.

  • Cyber security analyst

There are several paths into cyber security careers, including working up from an entry-level IT job, apprenticeships in cyber security or graduate entry with a STEM subject or even non-technical degree.

Salary range: from £25,000 to £28,000 starting salary, rising to around £30,000-£40,000 with experience. High level leadership roles in cyber security roles could pay £70,000 or more.
