Sage Talks Menopause

Category: Generation (Age Friendly)

Gender Focus

Sage UKI launched their menopause policy and supporting managers guide on International Women’s Day, earlier this year. Female and male employees at the event.

Menopause impacts around 21% of Sage employees so we were incredibly fortunate to welcome Dr Louise Newson a renowned GP and menopause specialist as a keynote speaker to a live audience in our Newcastle office, with watch parties held in London and Dublin and xxx following online. It was a fascinating presentation as Dr Louise dispelled myths and created a space to normalise the conversation around menopause for a packed audience of Sage employees. .

Some of the statistics out there are truly shocking, so it is more important than ever we normalise the conversation around menopause and enable our employees to access support and information.

As Dr Louise outlined, for the workplace, research showed that despite 20% of people suffering severely from one or more of the 37, yes 37, different physical and psychological symptoms, 77% do not realise their symptoms are related to menopause. This lack of knowledge is leading to:

  • 18% taking at least 8 weeks off work
  • 21.2% avoid going for a promotion
  • 18.2% reduce their hours
  • 12.1% resign

This is a talent management issue, as menopausal women are the fastest-growing demographic in the workforce.

Sage UKI launched their menopause policy and supporting managers guide on International Women’s Day, earlier this year – the menopause CSN followed, and is fast growing.

Sage encourages its colleagues to inform their line manager if they are experiencing menopausal symptoms at an early stage to ensure that symptoms are treated as an ongoing health issue rather than as individual instances of ill health. We also provide access to a confidential service via the Employee Assistance Programme which offers support, expert advice, and specialist counselling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is important that the working environment at Sage continues to support colleagues experiencing perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms which is why Sage allows minor adjustments to be made to an employee’s working environment. For example, assisting with temperature control, change in desk location, flexible working and occupational health can all make a huge difference.

However, as Angela Gallagher (VP People UK&I) said, this is just the beginning of our journey and there will be more to come over the next year. It is imperative we continue to build our offering as menopause impacts everybody in some way, whether directly or by supporting others experiencing symptoms.
